Medications

If you have brought medication (including prescription drugs, over the counter drugs and herbal products) that you are currently taking on a regular basis, please give it to the Nurse or Physician who admits you.

After obtaining information about the medications, a relative or friend may then return your medication to your home. If this is not possible, the medication will be kept for you until you leave the Hospital. Remember to ask for your medication when you are informed of your discharge.

Unless directed by your Physician, Pharmacist or Nurse, do not take any of your own medication while in Hospital. The medications you need while in the Hospital will be prescribed by your Physician and provided by a Pharmacist or Pharmacy Technician.

Pharmacists work with you and members of the health care team to make sure you get the right medication at the right time.

While you are in the Hospital, a Pharmacist may:

  • ask about any medication allergies you have reported
  • ask about medications you took at home and how they worked for you
  • tell you about the medications you are to go home with
  • help you practice taking medications

If you would like to talk to a Pharmacist while you are in the Hospital, ask your Nurse to contact one.
